VisualArtNow talks to Matthew Shaul, of the University of Herts Art and Design Gallery, and the Margaret Harvey Gallery, both in Hertfordshire

Tell us about your gallery/exhibition space- who are you currently showing?

We have two spaces; the very large Art and Design Gallery in Hatfield and the much smaller ‘shop front’ Margart Harvey Gallery in St Albans. We are a major producer of exhibitions that tour nationally and we have high level collaborations in place with galleries all over the UK.

We are currently showing Nick Crowe’s Exhibition Commemorative Glass; this is a collaboration with Cornerhouse Manchester.

How do you choose artists/exhibitions?

Sometimes we take proposals; sometimes we will curate either a solo show or a thematic group show, depending on our own curatorial interests and those of independently curated proposals we receive.

What has been the strangest exhibition you’ve curated?

Probably ‘We Didn’t mean to be bad Kids, The TV made us do it’ in summer of 2005; both the curator and the staff from the initiating venue were lunatics,

Which artists/pieces do you admire and why?

Andreas Gursky, I am crazy for photography
